Yes, the Ocean Beach (1950 Abbot St., Ocean Beach, 24 hours/day) sandy spot is part of the community of Ocean Beach townlet. Small for a San Diego beach, this one-mile stretch of sand beckons locals and visitors alike with its lifeguard-protected waters, multi-use areas, and famous Dog Beach. On Dog Beach, at the north end of Ocean Beach, dogs are allowed off-leash all day, every day. (Please clean up after your dog!)
Farther south, you’ll find designated areas for fishing, surfing, and swimming. Check with the lifeguards to figure out which is which. Be aware that rip currents can be strong at Ocean Beach, and take care when you’re out in the water. At the south end of the beach, you can take a walk out on the Ocean Beach pier; some people even bring a pole to spend some quiet time fishing out on the pier.
If you need a restroom or showers, head for the main lifeguard station at Abbot Street, which has both. Lifeguards stay on duty from 9 a.m. to dusk daily.
Amazingly ample parking can be found at three lots that range from the south to the north end of the beach. (The smallest lot is the one by the lifeguard station; go north or south for better parking opportunities.)
