Rather than focusing solely on the arts and achievements of humankind, the San Diego Museum of Man (1350 El Prado, 619/239-2001, www.museumofman.org, daily 10 a.m.–4:30 p.m., adults $10, youth 13–17 $7.50, children 3–12 $12) hones in on Man him- and herself.
In the Egyptian collection, you’ll find mummified humans and the possessions they planned to take with them to the next world, while in the Maya exhibit you’ll see reproductions and relics of South American daily life. The museum also features exhibits on the daily life and times of the Kumeyaay, the native people of the San Diego region.
Further exhibits describe the process of human evolution and physiology. A tour through these galleries teaches kids and adults alike about their own history, growth, development, and lifestyles.
The museum website highlights special events and traveling exhibitions. (In 2007, the Museum of Man hosted the Dead Sea Scrolls!)
