Not enough heat out on the beach? Have a meal at Jack’s Thai Spices (1768 Garnet Dr., 858/483-9830, www.jackthaispices.com, daily 11 a.m.–10 p.m., $13–20). Bright yellow walls and palm trees make this a welcoming and exotic place to dine. With Thai-style spare ribs, curries, peanut sauce dishes, noodles, rice, and a wide array of vegetarian options, Jack’s has something for everyone.
Jack himself might be on-site. (Look for an older Thai gentleman with a noticeably big grin.) He acts as both owner and chef, and created many of the specialty dishes himself.
If you know in advance that you plan to eat at Jack’s, check the website for a chance to win a free lunch in a weekly drawing. Also, check out the “Speak Thai” section to learn a few restaurant-friendly phrases.
