Looking for a rich slab of beef after a long day playing outside? Head for the Greystone Steakhouse (658 Fifth Ave., 619/232-0225, www.greystonesteakhouse.com, dinner only $30–48) in the heart of the Gaslamp. This upscale eatery makes a great start to a night out on the town with your sweetie.
The white tablecloths light up the dim interior, where the dining area surrounds a staircase leading down into the belly of the restaurant. Or if you prefer, get a table on the small patio out front so you can people-watch as the Gaslamp heats up with the evening crowd.
The menu includes all your favorite steakhouse standards—great cuts of beef, lobster and prawns, and an array of yummy sides. You’ll also find some interesting California-style entrées and appetizers. Portions are big, so consider splitting an entrée with your dinner partner so you can both enjoy an appetizer and some dessert.
The wine list focuses on California wines and includes a good selection of local vintages, and the full bar offers pre-dinner cosmos and martinis. The service can be a bit slow during the dinner hours, but it’s friendly and helpful.
