Thunderboat Regatta

For an event that’s unique to San Diego and totally noisy, you can’t beat the Thunderboat Regatta (www.thunderboatregatta.com, Sept.). For one weekend each September, Mission Bay revs up and gets loud, hosting a supercharged powerboat-racing event. You can see drag boat racing, Formula One, cracker box inboards, and much more.
Stands are set up on beaches around the bay to allow the most people the best views of the races — be sure to buy your tickets in advance to get a good seat. The excitement at this event is contagious, and the tension is real.
Be sure to bring earplugs, and extra money for parking if you want a space anywhere near the bay. (Alternately, check the website and the local resorts for deals on hotel rooms within walking distance of race-viewing areas.) Kids of all ages are welcome — check the schedule for this year’s family-oriented events.
