If your trip will focus on a visit to the Shasta Caverns, you’ll find that one of the nearest marinas to the Cavern gift shop and loading dock is the Shasta Marina Resort (18390 O’Brien Inlet Rd., Lakehead, 800/959-3359, www.shastalake.net). Easily accessed from I-5 towards the south end of the lake, this marina offers mid-sized houseboats and SeaSwirl BowRider ski boats with wakeboard towers.

The marina facilities include a gas dock, convenience and souvenir store with ice and swimsuits (sold separately), and a boat launch (free with moorage or houseboat rental). This middle-of-the road rental spot definitely offers friendly service, so be sure to ask about good houseboating spots if you’re new to Shasta Lake.
