Some travelers simply cannot do without their creature comforts. For those, on Shasta Lake there’s the O’Brien Mountain Inn (18026 O’Brien Inlet Rd., 530/238-8026, www.obrienmountaininn.com, $154–330). This casual-elegant bed-and-breakfast inn eschews the woodsy-lodge theme that most lodgings in the area use. Instead, the eight rooms and suites are painted in soft pastels with attractive matching furnishings and amenities. Some suites have kitchenettes, and some have fabulous whirlpool bathtubs, perfect for relaxing after a long day out playing on the lake!
Breakfast includes fresh coffee and baked goodies delivered to the door of your room at 8 a.m., then a full meal is served in the dining room at 9 a.m. The only real downside of the O’Brien is its location. It’s not right on the lakeshore, so the views and access won’t be right there. But the drive to the lake is minimal, and Lake Shasta Caverns sits nearby.
