Fishing

The rivers, streams, creeks, and lakes surrounding Mount Shasta make for some of the best freshwater fishing in all of California.

Fishing is permitted in Trinity Lake, Whiskeytown Lake, and most of the smaller lakes in the Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Area. You can bring your powered fishing boat to Trinity and Whiskeytown (be prepared to have it inspected for invasive mussels).

Types of fish in these lakes include rainbow trout, German brown trout, kokanee salmon, and Mackinaw, among others. All you need is a California fishing license, tackle, and plenty of bait. Check with the bait and tackle shops in the area to learn what type of bait is working this season, and where the best spots are.

Almost all the major rivers and feeder streams running through the Mount Shasta region are open to fishing. You can tie your fly on and cast out into the McCloud River, the Sacramento River, the Trinity River, and many more. These rivers carry salmon, steelhead, and trout. If you want a guide to help you navigate these waters, contact one of the many services that can take you out to the perfect fishing holes.

For fly-fishing, call Jack Trout International Fly Fishing Guide Service (530/926-4540, www.jacktrout.com). Jack’s guides can both take you out to the rivers and help you improve your fly-casting technique.

Outdoor Adventures Sport Fishing (800/670-4448, www.sacriverguide.com) not only takes trips out to the major NorCal rivers, it can guide you on a deep-water trip to Shasta Lake as well.
