Passports and Visas

If you’re visiting California from another country, you must present a valid passport upon entry into the United States. You must also hold a return plane or cruise ticket to your country of origin dated less than 90 days from your date of entry (Canada excepted).

If you hold a passport from one of the following countries, you do not need a visa to enter California: Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

In most other countries, the local U.S. embassy should be able to provide a free tourist visa, often within 24 hours of request. Do plan more time for visa processing if you’re requesting travel in the high summer season (June–Aug.).
