South of Carmel-by-the-Sea, is Point Lobos State Reserve (62 Hwy. 1, 831/624-4909, http://pt-lobos.parks.state.ca.us, daily 8 a.m.–sunset, $10). Known as one of the most beautiful parks in the state park system, Point Lobos offers hiking through forestland and along the beach, scuba diving (831/624-8413) off the shore, picnicking, and nature study.
Take a walk through unique ecosystems and observe the indigenous wildlife while strolling through the rugged landscape.
Be aware that from July through September fog often dims the summer sun at Point Lobos, even midday. Spring and fall are the best times to visit, weather-wise.
