Bixby Bridge

You’ll probably recognize the Bixby Bridge when you come upon it on Highway 1 in Big Sur. The picturesque cement open-spandrel arched bridge is one of the most photographed bridges in the nation, and it’s been used in countless car commercials over the years.

The bridge was built in the early 1930s as part of the massive Government Works project that completed Highway 1 through the Big Sur area to connect the road from the north end of California to the south.

Today, you can pull out either to the north or to the south of the bridge to take photos or just look out at the attractive span and Bixby Creek flowing into the Pacific far below.

Are there two Bixby Bridges? Nope, but the Rocky Creek Bridge (north of Bixby Bridge on Hwy. 1) is similar in design, if not quite as grand and picturesque.
