When locals speak of Deetjens, they could be referring to the inn, the restaurant, or the family that created both. But they all do speak of Deetjens, which operates as a non-profit organization dedicated to offering visitors to the Big Sur region great hospitality for reasonable rates. To stay at Deetjens Big Sur Inn (48865 Hwy. 1, 831/667-2377, www.deetjens.com, $80–200) is to become a small part of Big Sur’s history and culture.

It doesn’t look like a spot where legions of famous writers, artists, and Hollywood stars have laid their precious heads, but Deetjens can indeed boast a guest register that many hostelries in Beverly Hills would kill for. And yet, the motley collection of buildings also welcomed transient artists, San Francisco bohemians, and the occasional criminal looking for a spot to sleep as they traversed the coast on bicycles or even on foot.

Your guest room will be unique, still decorated with the art and collectibles chosen and arranged by Grandpa Deetjen many moons ago. The inn prides itself on its rustic historic construction—expect thin weathered walls, funky cabin construction, no outdoor locks on the doors, and an altogether unique experience.

Many rooms have shared baths, but you can request a room with private bath when you make reservations.

Deetjens prefers to offer a serene environment, and to that end does not permit children under 12 unless you rent both rooms of a two-room building.

Deetjens has no TVs or stereos, no phones in guest rooms, and no cell phone service. Two pay phones are available for emergencies, but other than that you’re truly cut off from the outside world. Decide for yourself whether this sounds terrifying or wonderful.
