Soccer
Trip Ideas
Paulistanos take their soccer very seriously. The two major rivals are São Paulo and Corinthians, and when they butt heads sparks fly. Games are played either at São Paulo’s home stadium of Morumbi (Praça Roberto Gomes Pedrosa, Morumbi, tel. 11/3749-8000) or at the Corinthians’ unofficial home stadium of Pacaembu (Praça Charles Miller, Pacaembu, tel. 11/6846-6000).
Try to avoid finals—not only will the stadiums be sold out, but the fans’ testosterone levels get dangerously high. Otherwise, catching a game is a heady experience. The well-funded teams boast some of the nation’s top players, and the atmosphere among fans is an intoxicating mixture of gripping suspense and over-the-top melodrama.
Indeed, it is recommended to spring for covered seats that will protect you from the projectiles lobbed in anger by frustrated fans. Tickets can be purchased at the stadiums themselves or online at www.ingressofacil.com.br.
