Although the best of Brazilian religious art is in Minas Gerais and Bahia, São Paulo’s Museu de Arte Sacra (Av. Tiradentes 676, Luz, tel. 11/3326-1373, http://artesacra.sarasa.com.br, 11 a.m.–7 p.m. Tues.–Sun., R$4) does an admirable job of showcasing works culled from the churches of these two states as well as other Brazilian regions.
The impressive 5,000-piece collection, which provides a wonderful overview of Brazilian baroque and rococo styles, includes sculptures and sacred artifacts fashioned out of wood, terra-cotta, silver, and gold.
Museu de Arte Sacra is housed in the Mosteiro da Luz, a carefully conserved 18th-century monastery still inhabited by cloistered nuns.
