Occupying a handsome 19th-century mansion in Botafogo, the Museu do Índio (Rua das Palmeiras 55, Botafogo, tel. 21/2286-8899, www.museodoindio.org.br, 9 a.m.–5:30 p.m. Tues.–Fri., 1–5 p.m. Sat.–Sun., R$3, free Sun.) possesses an extremely important collection of artifacts reflecting Brazil’s diverse indigenous groups.
Among the objects on display are hunting and cooking implements, traditional costumes, musical instruments, and religious talismans. These are accompanied by interesting multimedia displays that provide a good introduction to the social, religious, and economic life of various tribes.
The museum shop sells an attractive (and decently priced) array of authentic handicrafts.
