Although Carmen Miranda died tragically in 1955, at the age of 46, the legend of the “Lady in the Tutti Frutti Hat” lives on. A small, weirdly bunker-like complex houses the Museu Carmen Miranda (Av. Rui Barbosa in front of 560, Flamengo, tel. 21/2299-5586, www.funarj.rj.gov.br, 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Tues.–Fri., 1–5 p.m. Sat.–Sun., free).
Drag queens and fans of Golden Age Hollywood will adore this gloriously kitschy shrine featuring Carmen memorabilia. Highlights include her infamous sky-high platform shoes (Miranda was a tiny 1.52 meters/5 feet), outrageous gowns, gaudy costume jewelry, and of course, the inimitable headdresses topped with tropical fruit.
