Rio’s equivalent of Tiffany’s is H. Stern (Rua Visconde de Pirajá 490, Ipanema, tel. 21/2274-3447, www.hstern.com.br, 10 a.m.–7 p.m. Mon.–Fri., 10 a.m.–3 p.m. Sat.). If you haven’t already heard of Brazil’s most famous miner and maker of jewels, you will. Its PR team sends flyers to basically every hotel in Rio offering to pick you up, take you to the Ipanema headquarters for an interesting tour of their ateliers, and bring you back home again (hopefully with a small bag full of pricy rocks). Specialists in Brazil’s dazzling array of precious and semiprecious stones, H. Stern’s jewelers create some very innovative contemporary designs as well as more classic, conservative bling.
Antonio Bernardo (Rua Gárcia d’Avila 121, Ipanema, tel. 21/2512-7204, www.antoniobernardo.com.br, 10 a.m.–8 p.m. Mon.–Fri., 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Sat.) is a goldsmith, artist, and orchid lover (he adopted the Jardim Botânico’s orquidário) who designs beautifully wrought contemporary jewelry with great attentiveness to color, form and texture.
