AIDS and STDs
Brazil has one of the highest numbers of people living with HIV infections. According to statistics, more than 20 percent of infected people are women. Although Brazil has one of the world’s most highly respected and effective AIDS policies—aside from creating low-cost generic drugs, the Brazilian government’s fight against AIDS involves free medication and medical follow-up for all patients for life—it doesn’t prevent people from getting HIV in the first place.
Condoms—known as camisinhas (“little shirts”)—are widespread (you’ll find them in all pharmacies and many supermarkets) and there is not so much a stigma as a resistance to using them. As a result, you really have to be careful about HIV and STDs. Whether you’re with a man or a woman, always insist upon using a condom.
