Aside from the various Brazilian designer labels that wouldn’t be out of place in a swank São Paulo shopping mall, the Quadrado has a few unique boutiques worth checking out. Most stores open their doors late, usually at 2 p.m., but they often will stay open until about 11 p.m.

Cobras e Lagartos (tel. 73/3668-1962) uses recycled fabric and a traditional embroidery technique known colloquially as “frufru” to make playful pillows, carpets, and other home furnishings as well as cuddly toys, featuring bright colors and interesting textures.

Just as original are the wares on display at Marcenaria Trancoso (tel. 73/3668-1023, www.marcenariatrancoso.com.br). Incorporating native woods and natural fibers, the polished yet organic wooden objects and decorative accessories sold here combine a tropical aesthetic with contemporary sensibility that is distinctly Brazilian. Around town, you’ll notice many of artist Laila Assaf’s inspired floral lamps and accessories fashioned out of intricately assembled recycled plastic bottles. To purchase these and other creations, drop into her boutique/atelier Cheia de Graça (tel. 73/3668-1492).
