Beaches

Aside from the village itself, with its atmospheric 17th-century ruined fortress and 19th-century lighthouse, “Morro” consists of a quartet of nameless but utterly distinctive numbered beaches. Think of Primeira Praia (First Beach)—where most of the locals hang out—as a warm-up beach to whet your appetite for what’s to come.

Segunda Praia (Second Beach), packed with pousadas, restaurants, clubs, and beach bars is downright urban, but it also has the best swimming and snorkeling. By day, it’s full of hip young things knocking around soccer balls, volleyballs, and frescoballs, whereas when night falls, the raves and luaus begin.

Terceira Praia (Third Beach) is somewhat more tranquil and has some of the best water for diving. Last, but certainly not least, Quarta Praia (Fourth Beach) is the best preserved (and most gorgeous) of them all. Consequently, it’s a little more secluded and upscale, with posh but private resorts and restaurants.
