Since the paved highway opened, Itacaré has been flooded with pousadas—with everything ranging from backpackers’ refuges to tropically chic eco-resorts. In the summertime, price increases are the norm and it’s wise to reserve in advance. Prices listed are for the off-season. Some of the most inexpensive options—and also those closest to the action—are near Praia da Concha.
Pousada Jardim Zen (Condomínio Conchas do Mar, Rua C 15, tel. 73/3251-2109, R$60 d) offers a motel-like strip of seven basic, but tidy rooms with ceiling fans and hammocks, in a tranquil garden setting that’s only a quick walk from the beach.
Although it’s also close to the beach, you’ll feel more like Tarzan or Jane of the jungle if you check into Pousada da Lua (tel. 73/3251-2209, www.pousadadalua.com, R$100–150 d). Appealingly rustic bungalow apartments and individual chalets are set amidst a dense tangle of fragrant native Atlantic forest, offering ample tranquility (aside from the atmospheric bird calls and monkey cries). Breakfasts are Zen affairs accompanied by mood music and burning incense.
Around 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) from town, a favorite with the international crowd is
Pousada Sage Point (tel. 73/3251-2030, www.pousadasagepoint.com.br, R$229–339 d). On a jungly hilltop overlooking beautiful Praia de Tiririca, precious woods dominate the architecture of the 17 tastefully decorated rooms, which integrate harmoniously with the exuberant natural surroundings. Lavish tropical breakfasts are served on your private veranda or at the beachfront restaurant.
If you want to live it up and wind down at the same time, you won’t do better than the luxurious
Txai Resort (tel. 73/2101-5000, www.txai.com.br, R$875–1,050 d). Located 16 kilometers (10 miles) from Itacaré, in the direction of Ilhéus, the rambling palmy grounds of this former cocoa plantation gaze onto the white sands of Itacarezinho beach. Its 40 spacious bungalows and creatively decorated main lounges merge traditional architecture and organic materials with understated luxury whose soothing effects should be immediate. For relaxation reinforcement, yoga classes, massages, and alternative healing therapies are available.
