Historic Cambridge Beaches (30 Kings Point Rd., tel. 441/234-0331, toll-free 800/468-7300, fax 441/234-3352, www.cambridgebeaches.com, $470–1,765 d), no children under 16 except at Easter and Christmas) is one of the island’s premier “cottage colonies”—resorts in which units are arranged around a central clubhouse, amid many other facilities. The five-star, 30-acre resort has 94 rooms, five private beaches, a putting green, a croquet lawn, tennis courts, a water sports center, two restaurants, two bars, and a spa.

A relatively new pool with an infinity edge and waterfall feature is a highlight of the property. In the main house, a paneled library and stuffed floral sofas conjure the ambience of a grand English manse gone tropical. Old-style rooms and suites in cottages, or slick condo-style units overlooking Mangrove Bay, are furnished in an island-chic style—mahogany, sisal rugs, rattan, and bold florals leading the way.

Amenities include cable TV, Internet hookups, air-conditioning, and king-size beds. Bette Midler, Kenny G., and Natalie Cole have all stayed here over the years. The resort is now being heavily marketed as an adult-only escape for couples, and caters to them with special events such as lectures and workshops by world-famous sexologists, Valentine’s Day packages, and clothes-optional areas on the property.
