Somerset Long Bay is the perfect place to cool off, far from traffic and the crowds who frequent the larger South Shore beaches (including Warwick Long Bay) most weekdays. On weekends and public holidays, Somerset Long Bay sees lots of local families come for picnics and swimming.
Black Bay on Ireland Island South, opposite the Royal Naval Cemetery, has a gem of a beach that appears only at low tide. Night herons can sometimes be seen standing like statues on the coastal rocks—until they dart for crabs in the shoreline rock pools. Throughout most of the summer, it’s a good place for a shallow, calm swim, and there are picnic tables nearby, too.
