Air passengers arriving at L. F. Wade International Airport must pass first through Department of Immigration and then Customs controls. There are three separate lines—for Bermudian status-holders, Bermuda residents, and arriving foreigners—all of which can be long and tedious. Criticism is perennially leveled at airport officials and staff of both Customs and Department of Immigration operations. Patience, a friendly demeanor, and the correct paperwork will usually get you through. The island’s authorities and its legal system do not differentiate between drug dealers and those who carry small amounts of banned substances for personal consumption. For those who are caught, the penalties are stiff.
