Bermuda: A Romantic Retreat

Moongates, hidden beaches, star-speckled skies, and blossom-scented breezes—Bermuda’s charms, like the setting of an over-the-top pulp romance, soon put lovebirds in the mood. The island is a popular destination for couples planning a romantic long weekend, not least because of the easy flight from North American East Coast cities.

Long a favorite with honeymooners, Bermuda’s natural beauty and languorous pace are seductive to anyone hoping to celebrate a new romance or fall in love all over again.

Friday

Most flights from North America arrive in Bermuda at midday or early afternoon, leaving lots of time to begin unwinding. Check into the secluded waterfront estate of the West End’s Cambridge Beaches Resort, where you can sip swizzles beside the stunning infinity pool, play oh-so-civilized croquet, or spot turtles in the sea grass off tranquil coves. In the evening, ask for a private dinner on the sand at the resort’s Turtle Cove or Long Bay beaches. Tiki torches, a custom menu, and your own butler for the evening will make it a special start to your romantic getaway.

Saturday

Share a scooter (perfect for twosomes) and enjoy exploring the twisting, pastel back lanes of Somerset together. Stop in at nearby Dark ’n’ Stormy Beach Bar & Grill for lunch, where you can rent a kayak and paddle out to watch parrotfish on the shallow reefs near the HMS Vixen, an 1860s ironclad. Cocoon yourselves in the afternoon with a couple’s massage treatment at the hilltop Fairmont Southampton’s Willow Stream Spa. Later, over drinks, watch the sunset—and moonrise—over Hamilton from one of Front Street’s harborfront verandas. Catch the ferry back to Sandys.

Sunday

See the pristine South Shore beaches on horseback with a dawn trail ride from Warwick’s Spicelands Riding Centre.

Enjoy a bird’s-eye view with breakfast, at the quaint Lighthouse Restaurant on Gibbs Hill. Then head east with a picnic and spend the day at the Cooper’s Island Nature Reserve, a 44-acre peninsula bordered by a half-dozen beaches on the site of a former U.S. military base. The beaches’ azure privacy mimics scenes from romantic flicks like The Sandpiper or The Blue Lagoon. Visit historic St. George’s for an intimate soiree at Café Gio, off a cobblestoned lane on the waterfront.

Monday

Make sure you book an afternoon flight out if possible, to make the most of the morning. Play your partner on the resort’s putting green, luxuriate in a hot-stone treatment at the resort’s Ocean Spa, or rent a sailboat to cruise around Mangrove Bay before you leave.
