There are five groceries and a produce stand in Hopkins, making it easier to stock up on nibbles and booze without breaking the bank; Dong Lee’s Supermarket has the largest selection. The Garifuna women’s group sells johnnycakes, bread, and Creole buns.
There are only a few eateries in Hopkins, most very low-key. Most obvious is King Cassava’s (tel. 501/503-7305, 7 a.m.–midnight Tues.–Sun.), right at the main junction and providing a central, laid-back atmosphere. A bit south of there, The Watering Hole (tel. 501/614-8686), across from Tipple Tree, is very delicious.
Down on Southside, you’ll find good but slow food at Innie’s (tel. 501/523-7026); also check out the Yugadah Café (tel. 501/503-7089 or tel. 501/503-7255, 6 a.m.–2 p.m. and 5–10 p.m. Thurs.–Tues.) and Iris’s (tel. 501/523-7019, 8 a.m.–8:30 p.m. daily)—all have similarly relaxed menus and atmospheres.
Chef Rob’s Gourmet Café (tel. 501/670-0445, 12:15–9 p.m. Tues.–Sun.) serves up menu items like coconut soup, rib-eye steak, lamb stew in dark beer, and lobster bisque flavored with cognac. Executive chef Rob Pronk also offers a four-course dining experience for around US$25. Full bar and wine list.
Also on Hopkins’s more upscale side, Thong’s Café (tel. 501/662-0110, 8 a.m.–2 p.m. and 6–9 p.m. Wed.–Sat., 8 a.m.–2 p.m. Sun., US$3.75–13) serves bruschetta, eggplant parmigiano, and lasagna.
There are always a few fun and funky options on Northside as well, starting with the
Driftwood Beach Bar and Pizza Shack (tel. 501/667-4872 or tel. 501/664-6611, www.driftwoodpizza.com, 11 a.m.–10 p.m. Thurs.–Tues., US$8–23), where you can have amazing wood-fired pizza and play beach volleyball.
There’s also the Laruni Hati Beyabu Diner (opens at 10 a.m.), with nice Belizean and Mexican dishes for US$4–6, right on the beach under a cool thatch roof (laru ni hati means “clear blue sky” and beyabu means “seaside”). Get your Chinese fix at Rainbow Restaurant.
