This 1,500-acre parcel of crucial watershed was declared a protected area in 2001 and is co-managed by the Forestry Department and a unique community-based nonprofit organization called the Steadfast Tourism and Conservation Association (STACA, office in Steadfast village, tel. 501/603-9936, hya172003 [at] yahoo [dot] com).

Gorgeous Billy Barquedier National Park impacts two major watersheds: North Stann Creek and the Mullins River. There are hiking trails to waterfalls and swimming holes. The entrance to the jungle trail is at Mile 161/2, and the entrance to the main waterfall is at Mile 17; camping is permitted at the park warden’s camp (US$5 pp).

STACA is working on homestay (bed-and-breakfast) options and more campgrounds, so ask about your options. Entrance to the park is US$4 per person, and you are required to hire a trained BBNP park guide (even if you come with an outside guide), who all live in the village of Steadfast.

To visit BBNP from Dangriga, contact C & G Tours and Charters (29 Oak St., Dangriga, tel. 501/522-3641 or 501/610-2277, www.cgtourscharters.com).
