Driving the Northern Highway

If you are driving to Bermudian Landing or points north from downtown Belize City, leave on Freetown Road. You’ll pass through the intersection with Central American Boulevard (to the left) and Princess Margaret Drive (to the right). Continue straight out of town. As you cross this major intersection, the road becomes the Northern Highway; set your trip odometer just a couple of hundred yards farther, where the road begins a gentle bend to the right.

Expect a good deal of traffic in the mornings and afternoons on the stretch past the Bella Vista suburb and the Belize Biltmore Hotel. You’ll encounter lots of school buses, vehicles pulling over to pick up riders, and speed bumps. The Belize River is off to the left. At about Mile 5½, you’ll come to Haulover Bridge (one-way traffic) and continue skirting the river northward on Northern Highway.

Lucky Strike and Rockstone Pond Villages

The two closest villages to the Altun Ha Ruins offer a few refreshing community-based tourism services. There’s a Altun Ha Vendor’ s Association which sells, among other items, wonderful wood carvings of animals, Mayan masks, and walking sticks, all made locally. Or contact Lucky Strike Nature Trails (tel. 501/205-5503) for jungle bike tours to Altun Ha, among other trips. Humes Twin Kitchen is also walking distance from the ruin and offers traditional Belizean fare.
