Thursday nights are the biggest for dancing in Belize City, followed by Fridays, especially those that fall on payday. Nightclubs come and go like hurricanes in Belize City; at the moment, the best places for dancing are Palm Island (on the Northern Highway) and Club Next (in the Princess Hotel). Serious dancing usually doesn’t get started till after 11 p.m. Keep your wits about you and ask whether there have been recent shootings or stabbings in a place before selecting a club.
Ask around to find out where the best happy hours are being held—they often feature live music and free bocas (deep-fried something, probably). The bars at the Radisson (2 Marine Parade, tel. 501/223-3333), Biltmore (tel. 501/223-2302), and Princess Hotel (tel. 501/223-2670) are popular and provide safe, contained venues—and some of the highest drink prices in the city.
Bird’s Isle (south end of Albert St., tel. 501/207-2179) is popular for karaoke on Thursdays.
