Tucked away on a small street off of Tanao Road is Chote Chit; at more than 80 years old (the owner is never sure exactly when the place first opened), it is one of the oldest restaurants in Bangkok.

Krachoichuli Kimangsawat, whose grandfather originally opened the place, says the recipes here haven’t really changed in all that time, and you’ll find some things on the menu that you rarely see in other restaurants, such as banana-flower salad.

There is a gigantic selection in this humble spot, but better to just ask Khun Krachoichuli what she recommends. She’ll size you up, maybe make some small talk, and then she’ll start naming dishes. If she doesn’t say it, ask for the penang curry too.

If the restaurant is quiet she will tell you a bit about the family history with your meal (her English is excellent). Another plus: The beer here is the coldest in Bangkok.
