Call it part of the peacetime dividend: the same amphibious vehicle design that is now used to create these new “duck” vehicles (it’s an easy way to pronounce DUKW, their military designation) once was used by the U.S. Army as an invaluable invasion and transportation tool during World War II.
Today, the big, funny-looking white trucks take tourists on a 50-minute ride through the downtown neighborhoods and into the Inner Harbor itself for a 20-minute jaunt around the waterfront (tours run year-round). You’ll also be issued a quacking device, and instructed to use it liberally during your tour.
