From Bahía San Luis Gonzaga, it’s 64.5 kilometers (approximately 90 min.) of graded dirt-road driving to the Transpeninsular Highway. The road intersects Mexico 1 at Km. 229–230 in the town of Chapala.
About halfway from the coast to the highway, you’ll come across Coco’s Corner, a café that’s famous for its beer-can decor (and desert plants, too). Stop here for cold beer, soda, and burritos. Camping costs US$5 a night if you’ve run out of daylight. Owner Coco moved to the desert from Ensenada in 1990, following an accident in which he lost one leg.
He speaks some English and knows the area extremely well. When you sign his guestbook, he will draw a picture of your vehicle next to the entry.
