Baja residents come from as far away as Bahía de los Angeles and San Francisquito to stock up on foods and supplies in Guerrero Negro. Most of its restaurants and supermarkets line the main avenue of Boulevard Zapata.

Few travelers make their way through Guerrero Negro without stopping at Malarrimo Restaurant (Zapata, tel. 615/157-0100, 7 A.M.–10:30 P.M. daily, mains US$10–20) for fresh scallops, filet mignon, or gringo-style Mexican specialties. The adjoining gift shop has a great selection of souvenirs.

Locals prefer Don Gus (tel. 615/157-1611) on Boulevard Zapata, past the Malarrimo and on the opposite side of the street.

Santo Remedio (Domingo Carballo Félix, tel. 615/157-2909, www.elsantoremedio.com.mx, 8 A.M.–10 P.M. daily) became the upscale dining venue of choice in Guerrero Negro when it opened in 2008. Since it’s not on the main road through town, it can be difficult to find for travelers who arrive hungry after dark. Turn right at El Morro and before the Tiangis grocery store, and go two blocks to a sign. The restaurant will be on the left.

Closer to the highway, Puerto Viejo (no tel., 7 A.M.–11 P.M. daily, mains US$10–20) offers much of the same and free coffee with breakfast.

Nearby, just inside the entrance to town, the clean Las Cazuelas (tel. 615/157-1303, 7 A.M.–11 P.M. daily, mains US$6–12) specializes in Spanish-style mariscadas (seafood stews); it also serves 12 types of meat dishes and a variety of seafood platters.

Tiangis (Zapata 5, tel. 615/157-0055) is the largest grocery store in town, with a variety of foods and housewares. It is located next to the Dunas Motel and before the water tower.

If you don’t mind the limited selection, you can find discounted food items at the government-subsidized Tienda ISSSTE (no tel.) on Boulevard Zapata or Tienda ESSA (no tel.), across from the main entrance to the salt plant.
