South of the border between Baja California (Norte) and Baja California Sur, a variety of Mexican and gringo communities invite exploration.

This area begins with the saltworks town of Guerrero Negro, where travelers restock supplies, get on the Internet, and spend the night to wait for daylight driving hours.

Nearby, the Laguna Ojo de Liebre draws a crowd for whale-watching tours. Beyond it, the protected Desierto de Vizcaíno forms a large peninsula that juts out into the Pacific Ocean.

Continuing south, the palm oasis of San Ignacio is home to an historic Spanish mission and colonial village, as well as a launching point for more whale-watching on the Laguna San Ignacio.

Back on the Gulf coast, the river town of Mulegé and white-sand beaches along Bahía Concepción have become seasonal homes for American and Canadian snowbirds. And deep in the interior of the Sierra de San Francisco and the Sierra de Guadalupe, more historic missions and mysterious rock art sites await.
