The Central Baja region, from El Rosario near the Pacific coast east to Bahía Los Angeles on the Sea of Cortez and south to La Paz, presents some of the most dramatic desert and coastal scenery on the entire Baja Peninsula, as well as a variety of inviting Mexican and gringo communities, from the saltworks town of Guerrero Negro and the palm oasis of San Ignacio to the river town of Mulegé, remote beaches of Bahía Concepción, and national marine park offshore from Loreto. Visitors come to watch whales in winter and catch fish in spring and summer. Deep in the interior, the region offers opportunities to view historic missions and Amerindian cave paintings.
