It takes about 15 hours to drive the 1,124 kilometers from El Rosario to La Paz.
The stretch from El Rosario to Parador Punta Prieta is 240 kilometers, and this marks the turnoff to Bahía de los Angeles. From there, it’s another 68 kilometers (about an hour of driving time) to the coast.
It’s a good idea to stock up on supplies in El Rosario before making the trek across the desert, but after Km. 115, a number of ranchos along the highway operate small restaurants, where you can sample a plate of basic Mexican fare.
Mission Velicatá is an easy excursion off Mexico 1. Allow a couple of days to explore the Valle de los Cirios and three or four days for Bahía de los Angeles—longer if you are going there to dive, fish, or windsurf/kiteboard. Add another day for a side trip to San Borja.
