About 30 kilometers south of Cataviña, off the west side of the highway between Km. 209 and 210, the boulders that make up the hill of El Pedregoso stretch 610 meters into the sky. Though they appear to be a massive man-made art installation, the rocks are actually a natural formation that has resulted from thousands of years of erosion.
Between Km. 229 and 230, at Chapala Junction, you can take a graded road northeast to Bahía San Luis Gonzaga and Bahía de Calamajué on the Gulf coast. Keep an eye out for cirio, cardón, yucca, and cholla along the way.
At Km. 280, Parador Punta Prieta, an abandoned rest stop, marks the turnoff to Bahía de los Angeles. Follow the east fork southeast 68 kilometers to reach the Sea of Cortez. At this junction, the basic Lonchería Ramirez (no tel.) serves coffee and antojitos. Gas is sometimes available from a drum.
