The Boutique del Libro Antártida & Patagonia (25 de Mayo 62, tel. 2901/432117, www.antartidaypatagonia.com.ar) carries a wide choice of Argentine and imported books, in Spanish, English, and other languages, on the “uttermost part of the earth” and its surroundings, including current Moon Handbooks at reasonable prices; there are also novels for that long voyage across the Drake Passage to Antarctica. Its other Boutique del Libro (San Martín 1129, tel. 02901/424750) offers an excellent selection of Spanish-language books and a smaller choice of English-language titles.

Along with many similar venues along Ushuaia’s main shopping street, Fin del Mundo (San Martín 505, tel. 02901/422971) has many kitschy souvenirs but also maps and books. Nearby Laguna Negra (San Martín 513, tel. 02901/431144) specializes in locally produced chocolates.

Tierra de Humos (San Martín 246 and San Martín 861) stocks locally produced leather, fleeces, handicrafts, and silverwork. For purchases directly from the artisans, there’s the open-air Paseo de los Artesanos (Maipú and Lasserre), at the entrance to the Muelle Comercial (port).
