Leymi (25 de Mayo 1335, tel. 02964/42-1683, lunch and dinner daily) serves inexpensive fixed-price lunches and has a broad parrillada and pasta menu, plus other short orders. El Rincón de Julio (Elcano 805, tel. 02964/15-60-4261, lunch and dinner daily) is a hole-in-the-wall parrilla, highly regarded by locals, with lunch counter–style service.

Recent opened on the site of the classic La Nueva Piamontesa, Tante Sara (Belgrano 402, tel. 02964/42-4366, www.tantesara.com) is a branch of Ushuaia’s fine café-restaurant.

Mamá Flora (Belgrano 1101, tel. 02964/42-4087, breakfast and lunch daily) is a good breakfast choice that also has coffee and exquisite chocolates. At the plaza’s northwest corner, Limoncello (Rosal and Fagnano, tel. 02964/42-0134) is an exceptional ice creamery.

Several hotels have their own restaurants, most notably the Posada de los Sauces (Elcano 839, tel. 02964/43-0868, lunch and dinner daily), which deserves special mention for superb service, the cooked-to-order lomo a la pimienta (pepper steak, US$10) and its complimentary glass of wine. There’s also a 10 percent cash discount.
