Avenida del Libertador in downtown El Calafate is lined with souvenir shops such as Open Calafate (Avenida Libertador 996, tel. 02902/49-1254), which also sells books and maps. Keokén (Avenida Libertador 1311, keoken [at] cotecal [dot] com [dot] ar) has a more representative selection of Patagonian crafts.
Boutique del Libro (Avenida Libertador 1033, tel. 02902/49-1363) carries a broad selection of books (many in English) on Antarctica, Argentina, and Patagonia, including Moon handbooks and novels.
For premium homemade chocolates, try Ovejitas de la Patagonia (Avenida Libertador 1118, tel. 02902/49-1736), Laguna Negra (Avenida Libertador 1250, tel. 02902/49-2423), or any of several similar locales.
Recently, trendy Buenos Aires design and fashion shops have installed themselves here. Cardón (Emilio Amado 835, tel. 02902/49-2074), for instance, is a casual clothing counterpart to Esprit or Patagonia. Pampa (Avenida Libertador 1179, tel. 02902/49-1305) and Pueblo Indio (Avenida Libertador and 9 de Julio, tel. 02902/49-1965, www.puebloindio.com.ar) carry high-end crafts from around the country, including ceramics, silverwork, and tapestries.
