Accommodations
Trip Ideas
Accommodations in San Martín de los Andes are abundant, but the best values go fast. Reservations are advisable—and single occupants usually have to pay double rates—in summer, during Semana Santa, and throughout ski season. The municipal tourist office will make every effort to help find the best accommodations in your price range.
US$10–25
On the Junín highway, the wooded Camping del ACA (Avenida Koessler 2176, tel. 02972/42-9430, US$3 pp off-season, US$20 per site in summer) is spacious and shady, but the best sites go early. There are other campgrounds north and south of town in Parque Nacional Lanín.
In an attractive house with sparkling common areas, the 21-bed Hostel La Colorada (Avenida Koessler 1614, tel. 02972/41-1041, www.lacoloradahostel.com.ar, US$12–14 pp dorm, US$34 d) is an independent hostel that has mostly dorms but also one double with shared bath. Its main drawback is its location along a busy avenue.
US$25–50
Named for the giant redwood in its garden, the HI affiliate Hostel Secuoya (Rivadavia 411, tel. 02972/42-4485, www.hostelsecuoya.com.ar, US$14 pp dorm, US$35 d) isn’t up to Puma’s standards, with only two downstairs bathrooms and most of the beds upstairs in rooms with thin walls. Still, it’s friendly, well located, and has Wi-Fi; breakfast is a voucher to a downtown confitería.
Albergue Rukalhue (Juez del Valle 682, tel. 02972/42-7431, www.rukalhue.com.ar, US$15 pp dorm, US$48 d) offers respectable hostel accommodations as well as inexpensive dinners.
Babel Hostel (Rudecindo Roca 720, tel. 011/41-2120, www.babelhostel.com.ar, US$15 pp dorm) is a cozy new garden hostel. Peak-season reservations are imperative at HI-affiliated
Puma Hostel (Fosbery 535, tel. 02972/42-2443, www.pumahostel.com.ar, US$17 pp dorm, US$47 d), an attractive and well-run 50-bed facility north of the arroyo.
Belonging to another era, Hotel Turismo (Mascardi 501, tel. 02972/42-7592, hotelturismo [at] smandes [dot] com [dot] ar, US$26 s, US$36 d) still has an impressive exterior, but the rooms are small and dark compared with the city’s newer accommodations. The baths have been upgraded, though, and for a budget choice it’s by no means bad.
With responsive management, Hostería Las Lucarnas (Coronel Pérez 632, tel. 02972/42-7085, hosterialaslucarnas [at] gmail [dot] com, US$34 s, US$39 d) is a decent budget choice with amenities that include cable TV, Wi-Fi, strongboxes, and parking.
Near the lake, Hostería del Chapelco (Brown 297, tel. 02972/42-7610, hcchapelco [at] smandes [dot] com [dot] ar, US$42 s, US$48 d) has the best location of any hotel in its range; some second-story rooms have balconies with lake or mountain views.
US$50–100
At the east end of town, on the road toward Junín, Hostería Parque Los Andes (RN 234, Km 2, tel. 02972/42-8211, hosteriaparquelosandes [at] smandes [dot] com [dot] ar, US$53 s or d) retains its classic style but has brightened and improved its rooms. After Chilean poet Pablo Neruda fled over the Andes on horseback to avoid political persecution in 1949, he may have shared drinks with Juan Perón in the gallery bar.
Central Hotel Chapelco Ski (Belgrano 869, tel. 02972/42-7480, www.chapelcoskihotel.com.ar, US$48 s, US$55 d) is a little worn and has limited parking but is otherwise OK.
The handsome classic Hotel Crismalú (Rudecindo Roca 975, tel. 02972/42-7283, crismalu [at] smandes [dot] com [dot] ar, US$48 s, US$58 d) is showing its age but is still reasonable for what it offers.
Hotel Rosa de los Viajes (Avenida San Martín 821, tel. 02972/42-7484, rosahotel [at] smandes [dot] com [dot] ar, US$52 s, US$58 d) is small (20 rooms) and homey, but both foot and auto traffic are heavy in this part of town.
Just far enough off the main drag to ensure some quiet, Hotel Colonos del Sur (Rivadavia 686, tel. 02972/42-7224, www.colonosdelsur.com.ar, US$58 s or d) has smallish rooms with bathtubs in a category where showers are the rule.
Set among attractive gardens, Hostería Anay (Capitán Drury 841, tel. 02972/42-7514, anay [at] smandes [dot] com [dot] ar, US$48 s, US$61 d) has 10 cozy rooms and enjoys a welcome site setback from the street in a bustling area.
Run by relocated porteño shrinks, cozy Hostal del Lago (Rohde 854, tel. 02972/42-7598, hostaldellagosma [at] yahoo [dot] com [dot] ar, US$66 d) has six reasonably spacious rooms with good beds, desks, and cable TV, but it could use a color consultant.
Try also Hostal del Esquiador (Coronel Rohde 975, tel. 02972/42-7674, www.hostaldelesquiador.com.ar, UD$58 s, US$68 d), a block from the bus terminal, which has clean pleasant rooms with appealing designer touches.
Upstairs rooms are better at Hostería La Posta del Cazador (Avenida San Martín 175, tel. 02972/42-7501, www.postadelcazador.com.ar, US$77 s or d), a Middle European–style place on a quiet block near the lake. The credit-card surcharge is high—pay cash.
Sedate Hotel Intermonti (Villegas 717, tel./fax 02972/42-7454, www.hotelintermonti.com.ar, US$70 s, US$84 d) has 24 well-furnished midsize rooms, plus attractive common areas.
US$100–200
Hotel Antiguos (Coronel Díaz 753, tel. 02972/41-1876, www.hotelantiguos.com.ar, US$102 s or d) is a luminous new 12-room hotel with natural wood details and some luxuries, including Jacuzzis in every bathroom. While the rooms are on the small side, they are stylish.
Four-star
Hotel Patagonia Plaza (San Martín and Rivadavia, tel./fax 02972/42-2280, www.hotelpatagoniaplaza.com.ar, from US$167 s and US$185 d) has become one of the city’s premier accommodations, with 90 rooms ranging from relatively simple doubles to sprawling suites.
Over US$200
Hostería La Cheminee (Avenida Roca and Mariano Moreno, tel. 02972/42-7617, www.hosterialacheminee.com.ar, US$208 s or d), which has upgraded into one of the town’s most stylish hotels, has managed to raise its prices despite the down economy. It features an indoor pool, sauna, wine bar, art gallery, and many other distinctive features.
San Martín’s latest luxury option, Hostería Antares Patagonia (Avenida San Martín 251, tel. 02972/42-7670, www.antarespatagonia.com.ar, US$208 s or d) is a recycled and expanded family mansion on a large lot with 10 spacious (75-square-meter) suites, a heated pool, a sauna and a Jacuzzi, a business center, and other spacious common areas.
