The Fairmont Hotel Macdonald (10065 100th St.) overlooking the river valley has long been regarded as Edmonton’s premier luxury accommodation. For many years, it was the social center of the city. It was built in 1915 by the Grand Trunk Railway in the same chateau style used for many of the Canadian Pacific hotels across the country.
After it closed in 1983, plans to tear it down were aborted; $28 million was spent on refurbishing it and the hotel reopened, as grand and elegant as ever. The main lobby has been totally restored and opens to the Confederation Lounge and The Library, a bar overlooking the river that has the feel of an Edwardian gentleman’s club. Ask at the reception desk for a map of the hotel.
