The Forest Service has 24 cabins (518/885-3639 or 877/444-6777, www.recreation.gov, $45) in the Sitka area, most accessed by floatplane or water taxi from Sitka.

Redoubt Lake Cabin is at the end of a six-mile trail that starts in Silver Bay (10 miles southeast of Sitka). The cabin is also accessible by sea kayak from town, and a short portage takes you to Redoubt Lake.

The wheelchair-accessible Lake Eva Cabin is 27 miles northeast of Sitka on Baranof Island. Plotnikof Lake Cabin sits in the heart of the spectacularly rugged South Baranof Wilderness Area, a 45-minute flight from Sitka.

Baranof Lake Cabin looks across this blue-green lake to a waterfall. A trail at the end of the lake leads 0.5 miles to the little settlement of Baranof Warm Springs, where a privately owned hot spring is available.

Brent’s Beach Cabin is on the eastern shore of Kruzof Island, 15 miles northwest of Sitka. There’s a white-sand beach out front (rare in Southeast Alaska), and interesting caves and lava domes just up the shore.

The Allan Point Cabin, 16 miles north of Sitka, is an impressive two-story log cabin that commands a fine view across Nakwasina Sound from its location on the northeast end of Halleck Island. The equally spacious Samsing Cove Cabin sleeps 10 comfortably and is just six miles south of Sitka.
