The best deal in town is Alaska Island Hostel (805 Gjoa St., 907/772-3632 or 877/772-3632, www.alaskaislandhostel.com, adults $23, children $12, May–early Sept.), where Ryn Schneider makes everyone welcome. There are separate men’s and women’s dorms (4 bunks per room), along with a kitchen, laundry, and free Internet access. Children under age 6 are not allowed, and check-in is 5–8 p.m.

Petersburg’s largest lodging place, Tides Inn (307 N. 1st. St., 907/772-4288 or 800/665-8433, www.tidesinnalaska.com, $90–110 s, $100–120 d) has clean and well-maintained guest rooms, Wi-Fi, a guest computer, continental breakfast, and friendly owners. Most rooms include fridges and microwaves.

Scandia House (110 Nordic Dr., 907/772-4281 or 800/722-5006, www.scandiahousehotel.com) is a modern building with 33 brightly furnished guest rooms. Standard guest rooms (some with kitchenettes) go for $120–150 d; full suites with in-room hot tubs and king beds cost $185 d. A courtesy van and Wi-Fi are available.

The Lucky Loon (907/772-2345, www.theluckyloon.com) is a private beach house three miles south of town. Amenities include a covered deck, baths, a full kitchen, laundry, and Wi-Fi. It sleeps up to five for $200 per day with a three-day minimum.

Located along Frederick Sound just north of town, A Guest House at Water’s Edge (705 Sandy Beach Rd., 907/772-3736 or 800/868-4373, www.petersburglodgingandtours.com) is a quiet and peaceful home with two guest rooms, a full kitchen, baths, bikes, Wi-Fi, and courtesy shuttles. The house sleeps four guests ($175 pp or $150 d) with a three-night minimum. The owners—35-year residents—also lead ecotours through Kaleidoscope Cruises.

A number of fishing lodges line the Wrangell Narrows, but the nicest is Rocky Point Resort (907/772-4420, www.rockypointresortak.com), midway along the channel.
