The best deal in town is Alaska Island Hostel (805 Gjoa St., 907/772-3632 or 877/772-3632, www.alaskaislandhostel.com, adults $23, children $12, May–early Sept.), where Ryn Schneider makes everyone welcome. There are separate men’s and women’s dorms (4 bunks per room), along with a kitchen, laundry, and free Internet access. Children under age 6 are not allowed, and check-in is 5–8 p.m.
Petersburg’s largest lodging place, Tides Inn (307 N. 1st. St., 907/772-4288 or 800/665-8433, www.tidesinnalaska.com, $90–110 s, $100–120 d) has clean and well-maintained guest rooms, Wi-Fi, a guest computer, continental breakfast, and friendly owners. Most rooms include fridges and microwaves.
Scandia House (110 Nordic Dr., 907/772-4281 or 800/722-5006, www.scandiahousehotel.com) is a modern building with 33 brightly furnished guest rooms. Standard guest rooms (some with kitchenettes) go for $120–150 d; full suites with in-room hot tubs and king beds cost $185 d. A courtesy van and Wi-Fi are available.
The Lucky Loon (907/772-2345, www.theluckyloon.com) is a private beach house three miles south of town. Amenities include a covered deck, baths, a full kitchen, laundry, and Wi-Fi. It sleeps up to five for $200 per day with a three-day minimum.
Located along Frederick Sound just north of town, A Guest House at Water’s Edge (705 Sandy Beach Rd., 907/772-3736 or 800/868-4373, www.petersburglodgingandtours.com) is a quiet and peaceful home with two guest rooms, a full kitchen, baths, bikes, Wi-Fi, and courtesy shuttles. The house sleeps four guests ($175 pp or $150 d) with a three-night minimum. The owners—35-year residents—also lead ecotours through Kaleidoscope Cruises.
A number of fishing lodges line the Wrangell Narrows, but the nicest is Rocky Point Resort (907/772-4420, www.rockypointresortak.com), midway along the channel.
Bed-and-Breakfasts
One of Petersburg’s older homes, built in the 1920s, Broom Hus B&B (411 S. Nordic Dr., 907/772-3459, www.broomhus.com, May–Oct., $95 d) has a downstairs apartment with a full kitchen and a pleasant back deck. A continental breakfast is served.
Das Hagedorn Haus—The Hawthorne House (400 2nd St., 907/772-3775, www.dashagedornhaus.com, $80 s, $90 d)—is similar, with an attractive basement apartment. The owners prepare a full breakfast and provide a computer and Wi-Fi.
A short walk from the ferry terminal, Nordic House B&B (1106 Nordic Dr., 907/772-3620, www.nordichouse.net, $82–105 s, $92–105 d) is a comfortable and attractive home with a glassed-in deck overlooking the harbor along with Wi-Fi. Six guest rooms have private or shared baths, and a light breakfast is served. A separate apartment with a full kitchen costs $140 for up to four guests.
Waterfront B&B (1004 S. Nordic Dr., 907/772-9300, www.waterfrontbedandbreakfast.com, $110–121 d) stands on pilings along the shore just north of the ferry terminal. Five guest rooms include private baths and share a sitting room and large waterside deck; a full home-cooked breakfast and Wi-Fi are included.
