If you hit the bar at Fort Seward Lodge (907/766-2009), be sure to ask for a Roadkill, the flaming house drink that’s guaranteed to set your innards on fire. Fishers school up at two Front Street bars: Harbor Bar (907/766-2444), with occasional live bands, and Fogcutter Bar (907/766-2555).
Events
The Great Alaska Craftbeer & Homebrew Festival (www.seakfair.org/beerfestival.php) in mid-May is a fine opportunity to taste regional microbrews.
Around the summer solstice in June, the Kluane to Chilkat International Bike Relay (www.kcibr.org) attracts more than 1,100 cyclists for an exciting 160-mile relay race that ends in Haines. Other solstice events include live music and dancing at the fairgrounds.
July 4th brings a parade, a barbecue, a pie-eating contest, soapbox derby races, a race up Mt. Ripinski, and other fun events.
Every year during the last week of July thousands of visitors from all over Alaska and Yukon flock to Haines for the five-day-long Southeast Alaska State Fair (www.seakfair.org). Events include a logging show, a farmers market, a parade, pig races, a dog show, exhibits, and evening concerts by nationally known artists. Don’t miss this one!
The Alaska Bald Eagle Festival (www.baldeaglefest.org) in early November—peak time for eagle-viewing on the Chilkat Preserve—features scientific talks, workshops, and evening entertainment. The highlight comes with the dramatic release of formerly injured eagles back into the wild.
