ABOUT THE AUTHOR JULIAN SMITH
Julian has since authored Moon Virginia and Moon Four Corners, which won the Lowell Thomas Award for best guidebook from the Society of American Travel Writers. His writing and photography have appeared in Wired, The Washington Post, National Geographic Traveler, Smithsonian, Outside, New Scientist, National Geographic Adventure, the Los Angeles Times, and USA Today. He is also a contributor to Road Trip USA, Online Travel Planning for Dummies, and 1,000 Places to See in the U.S.A. & Canada Before You Die, the sequel to the New York Times bestseller. In his spare time (!), Julian earned a Masters’ degree in Wildlife Ecology, studying grizzly bears on the coast of British Columbia. He’s worked as a Canyonlands National Park ranger, guided tourists through the Central American rainforest, and tried (in vain) to protect the vegetable garden of one of the richest men in the world from marauding rodents. Along the way he’s found himself freezing atop Mount Kilimanjaro, meditating in a Japanese Zen temple, doused with rum in a Cuban santería ceremony, and fleeing from Ugandan pygmies, through absolutely no fault of his own. After spending two years in Washington, D.C. launching and editing a scientific journal for the Ecological Society of America, Julian heeded the call of the wild and headed back out westthis time for good. He currently lives in Portland, OR, where he is a science columnist for USA Weekend and teaches travel writing for the Gotham Writers Workshop. In 2006, he was chosen as the first Artist-in-Residence at Mesa Verde National Park. For more of his travel writing and photography, stop by Julian’s website, www.juliansmith.com.
