When Craig Schuhmann was 12, his father moved the family from California to Oregon so that he could fish for steelhead. Bob Schuhmann hauled his son all over the Northwest catching salmon, steelhead, and trout on every type of fishing gear imaginable. Craig, who hooked his first fish on an Adams Parachute when he was 9, became just as hooked as that first brown trout.

When most young people leave the West Coast for the Rockies, it’s to ski or snowboard. Not Craig. After college, he fled Portland for a job at an Orvis Store in Jackson Hole, WY, and spent several years fishing the “golden triangle” of Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming.

After graduating from the University of Portland with a masters in Theology, Craig settled into a social services job in downtown Portland and began cultivating his passion for Oregon waters. When he wasn’t serving meals to the poor, he was chasing steelhead on the Oregon Coast or giving fish sore lips on the Metolius, Williamson, or Wood Rivers.

Later, Craig moved his own family to Klamath Falls, mainly so he could hustle out to his favorite rivers more easily. He helped start a fly-fishing shop at The Ledge, a sporting goods store in Klamath Falls, and currently runs Guided Waters Fly Fishing, a guide sevice in the Klamath Basin. His favorite waters to guide on are the Williamson, Wood, Klamath, and Rogue Rivers. Craig has also written articles for Fly Tye magazine and his flies have appeared in the “Guide Flies” column of Northwest Fly Fishing magazine.
