ABOUT THE AUTHOR KIM WEIR
Kim Weir was born in Southern California but raised in far Northern California. For a time Kim's father operated a beer distributorship, a weekend job that required rattling around the foothills and mountains of Northern California in a Falstaff delivery van. Some of the author's earliest summer adventures involved washboarding with her dad down back roads, the stench of stale beer rising from flats of empties. Kim Weir has happily explored California byways ever sincetypically without the beer.
Since childhood Kim has struggled with herself over the relative merits of travel and books, as well as the challenges of hitching the two together. Take her first trip to the Grand Canyon. Upon arrival her parents insisted that the eleven-year-old put away James Michener long enough to at least get out and take a good look at that #!^%#$*&!! hole in the ground. Kim did better than that, though. She walked all the way down into the canyon that dayand back uptoting copies of The Source, Gone with the Wind, and other tomes in her knapsack as useful ballast against the wind.
Kim's love of California, travel, and doorstopper-quality books finally came together in 1990 with the publication of the comprehensive and colorful Moon Handbooks Northern California. Other big books soon followed, including Moon's Southern California, Coastal California, and California guides. Smaller books have joined the line-up, too, including the Moon guide to Monterey and Carmel.
Among other worthwhile pursuits Kim has worked as an editor at Scholars Press and as communications director for the Faculty Association of California Community Colleges (FACCC). She holds a degree in environmental studies and analysis from CSU, Chico and is now pursuing her MFA in Creative Writing. She is also an active member of the Society of American Travel Writers (SATW).
