ABOUT THE AUTHOR CHRISTOPHER P. BAKER

Christopher P. Baker was born and raised in Yorkshire, England. After receiving a B.A. (Honours) in Geography at University College London (including two Sahara research expeditions and an exchange program at Krakow University, Poland), he earned master's degrees in Latin American Studies from Liverpool University, and in Education from the Institute of Education, London University. He began his writing career in 1978 as Contributing Editor of Latin America for Land & Liberty, a London-based political journal. In 1980, he received a Scripps-Howard Foundation Scholarship in Journalism to attend the University of California, Berkeley. Since 1983, he has made his living as a professional travel and natural-sciences writer. He has been published in more than 150 publications worldwide, including Newsweek, BBC's World Magazine, National Wildlife, Islands, Elle, The Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune, the San Francisco Examiner, and Writer's Digest. For seven years, Christopher was also president of British Pride Tours, which he founded. He has escorted group tours to New Zealand, Hong Kong, Korea, England, and Cuba. Christopher is also a consultant to Intel and other international corporations. He appears frequently on radio and television talk shows, and as a guest-lecturer aboard cruise ships throughout the Caribbean and farther afield.
   Christopher is a member of the Society of American Travel Writers and has been honored with several awards for outstanding writing, including—four times—the prestigious Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Award and the 1995 Benjamin Franklin Award for "Best Travel Guide" for Moon Handbooks Costa Rica from Moon. In 1993, he was named "Best Travel News Investigative Reporter." His other books include Moon Handbooks Cuba, Moon Handbooks Havana, and Mi Moto Fidel: Motorcycling Through Castro's Cuba. He has also contributed chapters to books by Frommer's, Travelers' Tales, Time-Life Books, and Writer's Digest. He lives in California.
