ABOUT THE AUTHOR BECKY LOMAX

Becky Lomax first saw Glacier National Park at three years old, when her parents took her to visit friends in Two Medicine. Glacier made enough of an impression that she would return throughout her life.
During college, Becky worked two summers in the kitchen of Glacier Park Lodge, shredding lettuce for salads as an excuse to hike. While the sum total of her earnings tallied less than $300 that first summer, she walked away having hiked nearly 300 miles of the park’s trails.
After coming to terms with the fact that one could not make a living hiking, Becky finished college with a degree in English and the gumption to teach. She taught high school English for 14 years on an island outside of Seattle, returning once to Glacier during that time for a backpacking trip. One summer, while she and her husband Michael traveled in Alaska, they both decided it was time to jump careers. Instead of returning to Seattle and teaching, they dropped south to Montana, looking for a new place to live. They needed two things — a ski hill and a hiking park. Flathead Valley had both.
Seasonal jobs attracted Becky: She worked winters at Big Mountain Ski Resort and Glacier Nordic Center, followed by summer jobs with the forest service and guiding in Glacier National Park. She has worked as a hiking and backpacking guide in Glacier since 1997.
Becky is a frequent contributor to Backpacker magazine, Flathead Living, Montana Magazine, and Montana Outdoors and copyedits for Cross Country Skier.
